The Missouri Red Herring

I wanted to write about the Akin issue,as it is all I have seen and heard about for the last few days. My Friend Margie Breen posted today about an article written by Eve Ensler about the situation

Eve Ensler has an agenda to further the Culture of Death will her twisted Vagina Monilogues show, so I suggest that folks take everything that she says with a grain of salt. Killing a life in the womb is not the answer to a rape. If someone is pro-life, then that person, logically, would defend the life of a child conceived in rape. This candidate got mixed up with his argument.
I keep going back in my mind to the words ” a person is a person, no matter how small.” Yes, that’s a person in the womb, and not a criminal. Yes, rape is a very horrible crime, but adding an abortion on to that doesn’t make the rape go away. It adds another trama on the original pain of the rape. I have met a number of women who were conceived in rape, and they are doing wonderful things with their lives. Who wants to be the one to say that person should have been aborted? Having the baby can do good things for the healing process. Adoption is probably the best option for women who find themselves in this situation, but that decision should be made individually.
This whole “legitimate rape” argument is a red herring! Less than 1% of women have abortions because of rape or incest. Planned Parenthood supporters are using this argument to distract people from the fact that there have been over 53 million babies aborted in the U.S. since January 22, 1973. Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended, and about four in 10 of these are terminated by abortion. 22% of all pregnancies end in abortion! That’s the fact that we should be arguing about.

I was looking for something in the literature that would support the Candidate’s claim that “legitimate” rape (whatever that might be) can instantly shut down the woman’s reproductive system, I found a summary from a study in 2011. Like most studies, there are challenges, but the description of the potential physiological protective effect from the response reported by the women in the study is plausible. This bu no means, however, should give anyone the idea that the reproductive system shuts down during rape, or speeds up, for that matter.

The Candidate clearly chose his words extremely poorly. And time will tell what kind of effect that this has. The din over the first and ill-advised part of the statement has overshadowed the take home part of the statement….that Rape is a crime, and the criminal (the aggressive male) should be punished, not the child. This is the phrase that all people from the pro-life community can support, and do.

While this is a sentinel election, one that could forever change this country, it is paramount that this Candidate, Todd Akin, get away from the part of the statement that cannot be substantiated, apologize in every language he can muster, and move on as best he can.

About St. Anne Center for Reproductive Health

I am a board certified Reproductive Endocrinologist who practiced in the IVF world for 15 years. After seeing the damage that these treatments were causing couples and the complete commodification of life, fueled by a deeper understanding of my Roman Catholic faith, I left the field in 2010. I am currently praying for an end to the culture of death, and hoping to one day have the funding to open the St Anne Center for Reproductive Heath, to provide options for people with challenges to conceive with support and care to follow God's will.

Another point on the phrase “legitimate rape”, I haven’t heard him clarify it but there have been many instances where people have been accused illegitimately of rape, I for one do not mind that someone makes a distinction although perhaps he should have added the word charge in to his sentence.

Good point on the 1% of abortions being from rape or incest. This is a commonly used tactic by the left. They take the most extreme situation, hypothetical or real, and make it seem like the norm. They act like the rape and incest situation accounts for a majority of abortions. If that argument doesn’t work, then they turn it into a “women’s health” issue. Let’s face it….to groups like Planned Parenthood, it’s not about women’s health, it’s about MONEY. Abortion is a BIG business, and they don’t want to lose their money. That’s sick. If they really cared about the women, they would report cases of statutory rape, instead of ignoring them. If they cared about women, they wouldn’t be embracing someone like Bill Clinton, who is an accused rapist and serial cheater. This is about making money, pure and simple. They’re not protecting women; they’re exploiting them.
